w210 (e300td), lamp defective
I've just bought a 1998 e300td and it periodically shows a lamp defective message. I've seen that there are a few other threads about this problem. There is definitely an issue with the right rear brake light - I have seen it not come on (the rear headlight filament in the same bulb though works fine). I've followed the step by step post and it points to the brake lights too; if i start the car in park and press the brake pedal, i do sometimes get the msg.
I removed the cluster from the car and there is quite a big 'burn' pit on one of the tracks for this bulb. I've tried to fix it with a bit of copper soldered and araldited to it (true professional) but i still get the msg intermittently.
- Firstly I was wondering if anyone can recommend somewhere on the web that I can order a new light cluster (and also, does anyone know whether it would come with the bulb holders?)
- Secondly, I am a bit worried that maybe it isn't the cluster. I need to get out there with a multimeter and check but I was wondering where the earth source is for the light, and if perhaps there could be a problem there? My dad reckoned that there was at one point a problem with the reversing lights too, so if there was a common earth fault of some sort that could explain the difficulty in fixing this. Is there a special earthing stud or something like that in the boot?
- Thirdly, aside from removing all the bulb holders, polishing them up, polishing the tracks etc, or to save me getting a new cluster, is there anywhere else i should be looking?
Thanks v much for any advice
