Foremost, don't be discouraged by many of the posts on this or any other forum. Understand that most people don't post unless they are having a problem. You could get a slewed impression of quality and reliability from forums only. I believe for every negative poster there are many more simply enjoying the ride with nothing to say.
In general, the SLs from any year were the top of the Mercedes line and built to be very robust and reliable. Your '76 is pre-complication so has the potential of better reliability perhaps at the expense of computer-optimized performance. Real tune-ups will be required.
Maintenance-wise, all Benz' particularly the older ones are reasonably easy to handle. That said, the SLs are a little less so simply because their smaller size makes access to some components more difficult. Since they are so popular, spare parts for these cars regardless of age are abundant both OEM and aftermarket. Sort of like old Harleys.
Before you buy, GET A PROFESSIONAL APPRAISAL of the cars condition. Look for rust and if well kept maintenance records are available you can make an informed decision.
My experience is in a newer version (560SL) and I have never regretted the purchase. It is my literal daily driver and brings a smile to my face every day. Come join us on the road.
