Exclamation 300e Automatic gearbox fail

Hi users, I have a 89 300e 3.0lt automatic. After pulling over last night and attempting to take off (under heavy acceleration) the auto has stopped engaging, the car has always had a slight push forward but not motion when it is revved out of gear even when in park. the car still dose that but will not move in any of the gears (except for the slight push). the shifter is fine and feels as normal all else seems fine.

I'm guessing its a case of a new gearbox a rebuild or new bands.......

but i was just wondering if there is any common fault that occurs with these
boxes that is an easy fix. cant find any info.

Thanks any help is greatly appreciated my baby is stopped on a back street where it could easly be damaged or stolen

Exclamation

Hi flyboyike, thank you for your response. The fluid levels are fine the oil could do with a change but aside from that all is fine, the car is self has only done 150,000 so i am surprised after all i have read about these cars that it is having this problem....

any other ideas?? I have been told before that they can have problems with valves getting stuck and needing replacing but this is something i know little about and im guessing would be expensive to replace.

i have attached a photo.

Sorry I can't help diagnosing your transmission problem but I would have it towed to a safer place until you get some better answers. Have you tried posting this on the W124 forum too? Scroll down from here until you see it in the sedans section. Good luck and welcome.

Thank you Musikmann, I since have got my car towed to a friends house as where I live has shared underground parking, making it hard to work on my car. I have spotted an 86 300e for $1000 with amg body kit with tags but very poor paint and very rough though out but I am unsure wheather the box is compatible or what ratios it has, it has the switch on it for hills... but i think I need more time to make sure my problem is major and not just an easy fix. I have been reading about gearbox valves, b2 pistons and all sorts so I guess it will be a slow and pain staking process of elimination. I will have to get posting.

HAd this one too

i had this with my 260e, it was nothing to do with the b2 piston. The problem was the band had worn, and the clutch drum was worn, i downloaded the manual for the trans, you need the numbers on the trans tag to get the right manual. I stripped the trans down found the problem and fell over when i found the price of the new parts. I used a bit of Kiwi ingenuity and did a mod on the band and made a slightly longer push rod it works great.

Hi DarKsouL383, Ive priced a few boxes around the gold coast from few wreckers first guy said $660 second guy $900 third guy $990 so clearly i am opting for the $660. But also the guy from the wreckers with the box for $660 recommended I change filter + oil before buying a new box as he said he has heard of the same problem solved from a filter and or flush. So that is what I will be up to this weekend. I used to have the luxury of my brothers automotive machining workshop plus a hoist in my fathers shed, but now all i have is a friends single car garage because I have moved over 1900km away... So it will be fun, ill keep posting.

I just fixed my 722.3 tranny (probably almost the same as yours) at my '91 300 SEL (W140) with 700.000 km on it. I was surprised that gears were still in good shape (no visible signs of wear), bands were allright (still plenty of friction material) but clutch friction plates were worn.

So yours with 150k miles cannot be that bad inside. But of course something is bad either in the bands/clutches/pistons or in the valve body, which controls it all. Or it could be the fluid pressure provided by the fluid pump (which is why fluid leves should be checked). Since all gears do not work, my guess is either the fluid pump or the torque converter.

If you get the ATSG manual for 722.3 and 722.4, you will find good instructions on how to measure fluid pressure at various points. And part numbers/drawings can be found at ????????-??????? ????????????? DETALI.RU - ???????? ??? ????? ????????..

Hello Minnet, it is good to hear that some 722. boxes can survive big miles. I have since drained the box and torque converter replaced the filter and fluid started it warmed the box up but still no go. So I guess a rebuild is inevitable. I just need to save the $2000 - $3000 to get the job done. I will post when I have progress.
