Smile Newby!

Hi- Im Pat from Maidstone- I stumbled accross your site while trying to fix my old E Class. Its a 96 w210 2 ltr petrol, and we only paid a few grand for it 4 years ago- and its cost us hardly anything, and has been a faithfull runabout for my wife. Its done 176k miles- having been brought by my Boss when it had 24k on it, owned by him for about 5 years then passed to his wife - all Merc serviced- and on to us , non Merc serviced as the food chain dropped!
Obviously now its time to spend a few bob on it- so here I am!

Well thanks for the welcome- sometimes, one wonders if anyone notices new guys coming ON, looking for something for nothing!
Actually, I’m not a complete dick when it comes to working on cars- but ECUs and electronic relays need tools to diagnose faults with- or luck or intuition. Which is sort of what brought me here- trying to find out where the fuel-pump was.
The wife’s car started the other week fine- then it cut after about 40 seconds. So, she grabbed my keys and went off in my Freelander- problem solved!

I actually forgot about it- the Merc not starting, until on Valentine’s day- I decided Pizza! And went for the Merc keys. Sure enough- It turned over slowly- then I remembered-... and fired, ran, then cut. By this time, a few more jabs at the starter and the battery was flat.

Oh well, that seemed like fuel, I thought.

Then while en route in the Freelander to Americas finest, I mulled over fuel? Is there any in there? Ice in the filter- as it was about minus 4- water in the fuel? Possible? Fuel pump? ECU triggering relay?

Later in the week- I called our garage who does out annual MOT tests, and he wasn’t going to come out and suggested I get it to him... and then said- have you tried the AA or RAC? Well- I only use them when I break down with a puncture on the motorbike! Why not? Give 'em a try!

They can a day later- as we were not desperate and in the pouring rain, with phone and laptop computer diagnosed the obvious - fuel (!!!) pump or relay- They found the fuel pump- but couldn’t find the relay. Off course by this time I must add Id charged the battery- and the AA tried so many times on the starter and jump-starter- that the car yielded this poking and fired, then ran, then cut, then ran- and ran- and ever after 20 mins- started again.

So, the AA had taken it a stage further- and told me to get a new pump and filter. They suggested that the relay- wherever it is- sometimes need to simply be pulled out and contacts cleaned. I’m sure someone will enlighten me as to the location!

A parcel later from EBay finest and I’ll do the job next weekend.

This weekend was oil and discs for the Freelander...

pHs, ever changed the oil on a Freelander V6? Not a five minute job, I can tell you!!
