Post Considering Purchasing 2009 ML Bluetech

Hello Everyone,

I'm considering purchasing a ML 320 Bluetech for the wife. It's an interesting vehicle with great gas mileage and the ability to tow my boats etc.

My concern is how much time this car might spend in the shop and repair bills.

We just sold our CLK55 AMG Convertible which had 5 engine oil leaks, two tranny leaks, one axle leak, mass air sensor failure etc. in the last 13 months. It only had 42k on odometer when we sold it. Most unreliable car I've ever had, by a good measure.

I'm having a very hard time getting comfortable with the idea of owning another problem child. Once bite, twice shy.

I was hoping the forum could give me some feedback on their GenII ML exprience. The service manager at MB he said that the motor mounts ($1000) and valve seals ($300) go out every 65k miles or so...

Cheers!

MB diesels are the best engines in passenger vehicles in the World, so you can't loose here. IMHO the in-line and V6 cdi engines are mechanical marvels.
Than ML body seems to be hit or miss for over a decade.
IMHO trusted mechanic can make it hit, while stealer can make it miss.
Our ML320 runs 12 th year in perfect condition totaling $150 in repairs over those years.
I DIY it for years and am helping my son who is driving it now.
Those cars/trucks are so good that you get bored of them before they show some real problems.
Welcome to the forum.

I searched for a new vehicle of over a year, ended up landing on ML 2009 320 also. I love it, gas mileage is freaking great. In regard to problem child, one car differs from another. I have done a lot of research comparing to bmw x5 (same year) just to find out that bmw has more problems overall. We are at 11,000 km and so far its been great. Im not holding my breath though. Extended warranty is a way to go too.
Im surprised at your amg being so problematic. It is a different build then regular mercedes though.

If you are looking for rock solid reliability, then the ML is not for you. It is built in good old 'Bama, not Germany. Need I say more? You may want to look at a Lexus RX or GX (no Diesel option on these, but the RX gets great gas mileage), should you want a true oil-change only vehicle.

Audi makes very nice "Clean diesel" SUV.
The Tuareg with V10 diesel is class on its own.
I only got sticker shock.
I bought ML320 new back in 98 because the value at the time was unbeatable. I still think it is. What is new ML Bluetec running for?
I am not talking leather, phones and DVD. Just the car?
