W123 240D, then 240D, then 300D and now 230ce

Ladies and gentlemen,
thanks for your welcome. Now on my 4th W123 , I come to you looking for service advice. As there is no Haynes for the 230ce ( W123 1985) I just need a few clues as to setting up the negine for smoothness and reliability. Oh, and mpg. Did a run driving pretty carefully (75mph ish) and got 25mpg (imperial) Pretty happy with that as I have had a lot less just driving for fun. Can I expect any better?
My new ride is pretty nice, 1985 champagne with light brown leather ( any tips on feeding and nourishing) 115000, usual knocking noise from the off side rear which I have had on my previous Mercs.
It clunks a bit in and out of drive and reverse as well . Not always, just top try and catch you out. Drags a bit forwards at tickover.I guess that is why the handbrake needed adjustment. All my previous have been 4 and 5 speed manuals.
Me? I am happy as a happy thing.
