If you searched you probably came across one of my threads on this. After an oil change mine doesn't need any topping off for close to 2500 miles. Then the interval between quarts gets progressively shorter until the next change when the cycle repeats itself. Toward the end of the oil's lifetime I am adding a little more than 1qt/1000. As others have posted, 1qt/3000 miles is nothing to worry about.
In my experience, the car's internal low oil warning will not pop up until you are 2 quarts low. But if you manually measure it using the steering wheel controls it will tell you at ADD 1.0 QUART and possibly ADD 1.5 QUART.
As far as where it is going, it's probably slipping past the oil control rings and into the cylinders, then burning off. You might have a leak that you won't see on the driveway because the underbody protective "belly pan" could be catching it. My rear main seal was discovered to be leaking at about 65,000 miles and now at 80,000 I have a valve cover leak.
