I am a noob to BenzWorld....
My current cars are: (1) E500 4matic - 2004 in Jade Black (70K miles); (2) E320 4matic wagon Desert Silver (135K miles). The E500 is sport, but I had them swap the rims for std E500 because they look better. My E320 is pretty stock except for AMG front brakes. Which necessitated AMG rims all round for clearance ... that solved the pathetic rotor warping on the stock system.
The E500 has chronic DVD NAV troubles ... since day 1 and goodness knows how many days in the shop. Otherwise, its one quick motor.
The E320 ... I love this car, but it has had its share of trouble. More frikkin control arms, bushings, ball joints than I care to mention. Then last year it started eating front right tires. Michelin PS A/S Pluses in 5000 miles. Buy a new one put in on the back, rotate a back to the front and presto bald on the outside edge! Camber wear ... except that all specs were correct. Expensive (I posted about this). Maybe its finally right with new control arm bushings. I am contemplating buying the entire suspension from a low mileage salvage car (untouched front end!!!) and just replacing the whole mess. Why? Because it is an exceptionally fine ride on the highway. I just ordered a new set of Michelin Pilot Alpin PA3s for it.
That said, I loved my W124 wagon more. E280 with a straight six. And huge inside -- with a ride that put my present wagon to shame, or the E500. The engine was vibration-less. And silent. The only way that I knew that it was running was to look at the tach. It never broke down or had ANY problems. I had to sell it when I left England to go back to Boston. I really want a GL 420 CDI -- but the "wisdom" in Stuttgart won't make it happen for us here in the States. And that is a pity, because that is one stonking great beast.
Thanks for a great forum.
