Timing Chain, Intake Problems

My name is David. I bought a 1986 420SEL with 117,583 miles on it. I knew it needed a tune up and brakes. While my mechanic who specializes in MB was giving it a tune up they said it needed everything except plugs; they were good. They did the tune up and the brakes. I got the car back and it was running worst the when I put it in. When the car is cold it runs like new, hard to tell its even on, but when it gets hot it seems to get out of timing running really rough. I brought it back to my mechanic. He looked at the car and said that now it needed plugs, but that didn't fix the problem, so I brought it back to him again. He came back to me and said, It needs a full timing chain service for about $ 2,200.00, it appears one of the rails has been changed but I recommend giving it a full service. I decided to bring it to my local MB dealer. The dealer said, "you told us it needs a timing chain and maybe your correct but we believe the bulk of your problem is that your intake manifold needs to be resealed." They also stated, "we found the estimate from your mechanic about performing a timing service on the car for $2,200.00, that's a really great company and we send out most of our machine work to them, "I would recommend you let them do everything as it would cost you $3,400.00 for us to do all the work"

The funny thing is that the 90 year old man that I bought the car from said he had just had the Timing chain replaced!!!!

My wife and son both have very serious illnesses, so I am in financial trouble; please can anyone give me insurtuction on how to fix ithis car or advise on this car?

Can I fix this car myself, how do I know it really needs this work?

My email is ccmginc@hotmail.com

From what I understand those W126 cars all need a timing chain replacement eventually as a periodic maintenance item. A friend wanted to sell me one cheap, $3500 for a clean 1986 560 SEL, but he couldn't prove that had been done and as you noted it's a significant expense. My dealer told me it would take $6500 to make it right. I passed on it.

I would ask this on the W126 forum for some intelligent answers. This general forum is hit and miss. Odds are several of those owners have been to the same rodeo. Good luck, welcome to the forum, and best wishes to your wife and son.
