Post '92 300e 2.6 hard start

hi all~!
i have recently aquired a winter project. it's a 92 300e 2.6
i got it with 167k miles on the clock and a blown head gasket.

so. after the gasket job,(it was fairly easy) and a new fuel filter( it was rusty and old). the car started once. it reved up to about 1200 rpms for about 5-7 minutes, the engine temp went up to about 40 and the rev crashed and the car stalled.

after spending some time replacing the obvious items to get out of the way,(like plugs, distributor cap and rotor and wires) it still won't start.

after reading up abit on this wonderful website! i thought it could be the fuel relay going bad, but after some tests i don't think it 's the relay.

after a few tries at the drivers seat to start the thing, it seems to be getting flooded out. this was confirmed when i pulled the plugs. they were soaked with fuel.

now i'm looking to see if the cold start injector is just on all the time. and the 2 pin temp sensor has bad leads.( would this alone cause the symtoms?)
and i think i need to check the warm up regulator for stuck or leaks in side.

i havent ordered a fuel pressure tester but i was told that i can isolate bad pumps by measuring the amound of amps they draw, with normal draw is 5-8 amps. i haven't able to do this test becuase i haven't taken the map box apart yet.

does you think i'm looking at the right places? am i far off?
it would be nice to get this thing up and running for a ski trip soon!

it was the ovp and the mixture screw. the previous owner had messed with it as if he dropped his winter nut in there. it took four turns CCW to get it to run.

so it did run beautifully for 20 minutes, then the car stalled aburptly and i began to check the spark plugs one at a time. -all good.

pulled the valve cover to get a visual on all the valve stems. -all there.

but the timing chain wasn't!

so i began to take the front end apart. and the timing chain is all bunched up in the bottom of the front engine cover
and i discover that there's a hole in the front cover and the chain had fallen in the oil pan.

now i have issues.. i can't get the center harmonic balancer hub bolt out
and the front engine cover is broken. along with the chain guides.
i was able to get timing chain right away but i also don't know where i can get a chain tool?!

this project is turning out to be a real pain
new york this time of the year is very cold and i have been braving the worst conditions with the thought that it's just a head gasket job in the begining.
any one do a timing job on a w124? any words of advise for
a mercedes newb?

lol.. well thanks all for the warm welcome.
this forum is a bit of a safe heaven for me to come in side and console common sense.
