cigarette lighter seems loose

I have a 2001 E320 4Matic and when I plug a device in the lighter, I have to move it around to get a good connection. this happens with more than one device. I'm guessing I need a new lighter socket. My question is, do I have to get a special lighter for a Mercedes or can I purchase any kind?

thanks

That is a commonly reported problem. As hard as I try, my cell phone charger will not mate with the MB lighter socket. They are an oddball size. If this a major issue for you, I'd look into a made for US cars socket/lighter combo. As long as it is 12v I'm sure you can get it to work.

Thumbs up Loose lighter socket

Thanks for your help.
I'll just go with a lighter from Autozone or somewhere.

EVERY car charger that I've ever bought has a black plastic shim attached to it that is designed to be inserted into the cigarette lighter to shim the difference in size between the lighter socket and the charger. Here's what it looks like. You can just shim the charger/power cord with a piece of plastic on each side of the plug if you don't have one of these shims.

It seems the lighter socket on MBs is a little different, the plastic sleeve was included with all Motorola power cords in the 90s. I have not seen one in the last 10 years or so. I do have two, but you have to remember that they stay in the socket some times and then you have to pull it out and re-index it. It can be best described as a plastic sleeve, with notches to accomodate the contacts on the plug ay one end

Hi,

Where can I buy this shim? I am DESPERATELY looking for something like this. A portable DVD I used to have came with this but while shifting houses, it got misplaced. Any help/guidance would be HUGELY HUGELY HUGELY appreciated.
