Spain

Hi,

I am a new member living in Canada, and am contemplating buying a 2007 ML 320 CDI and taking it with me to Europe ( Spain) when I am transferred there.

What modifications would be necessary to comply with Spanish regulations. I was told it would just be head lights and tail lights.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

This might be a better question to ask someone at Canada's Spanish embassy or consulate. A lot of us don't even know on which side of the road they drive. Joking there, but every country's laws are a bit different when it comes to importing cars made legal for somewhere else. Good luck.

First you would have to figure out if Canada will even allow you to export the vehicle and if Spain will allow you to import it. There may be an outright ban on all vehicles under a certain age. Most likely this would be a highly cost prohibitive venture. Ocean Freight alone would be somewhere around $2-4000 (USD) ONE WAY. Then you have tax, duty, ect.. on top of that. I'd be willing to bet the Spanish don't like big a$$ SUV's on their roads, so they will tax you heavily for registration and/or road tax.
You would be best off selling the truck before you leave and get a more fuel efficient sedan in Spain.

On the other hand EXPORTING German SUV from US to Europe is blooming bussines in last years.
Suppose new ML350 in Europe runs well over $60k.
While few years old BMW X5 can be bought here for pennies -it is worth a fortune in any European country.
Just like RR here.

And both Spain and Germany are part of EU where nothing prevents goods crossing country borders. Taxation can be country specific but that would be the same for a car that was built in Spain, imported from Germany or imported from Canada. Customs duties make a difference and the necessary technical modifications that the OP must have been really after.

Thanks, I've done that.

Well, in my case the cost of the freight is not an issue, fortunately.

Actually I have a big gaz guzzler SUV and am looking at downsizing to a smaller, more fuel efficient 320 CDI.

I am hoping to get an estimate of the mods necessary to register the 320 CDI there.

Thanks.

Hi
The sapnish civil service is a bit crazy. You may find it a lot easier to use a "Gestor" for example:-
Home
But it would maybe cheaper to buy a car in Spain remember Spain is really deep in the economic mire so you should be able to do a good deal.
This will give you some idea of Spanish prices.

Which part of Spain are you relocating to?
