I change cars like underwear

Well here I go again
Got a good offer on my 93 400e so I'm car shopping again

here are my prospects in the $3k range

1. 98 Audi A4 Quattro 2.8 auto all stock 188k
2. 94 Audi Cab' 2.8 auto new top 17" rims (salvage/minor damage repaired) 98k
3. 98 Audi A6 Quattro Wagon stock 154k
4. 93 BMW 325i 5 spd 4 door faded hood 18" M3 rims 150k
5. 94 BMW 540i auto very clean in/out stock 168k
5. 97 BMW 540 6 speed, ext clean, nice body kit, CEL but runs well 235k

havent seen any Mercs worth considering yet

I'm leaning towards Audi because AWD is beneficial here
also the Cab model (FWD) has all maintenance history
and the shop that's selling it has done maintenance since 2001

What car would you go with?

Past Euros: 91 MBZ 300TE, 91 Jaguar XJS V12 Coupe, 94 Alfa Romeo 164 LS, 80 BMW 320i, 85 BMW 528e, 86 BMW 325e, 88 BMW 325e, 88 BMW 325i Cab, 89 BMW 325ix, 91 325i Cabrio, 93 BMW 740i, 94 BMW 740iL, 95 BMW 525i, 78 Fiat Spyder 124, 98 Land Rover D1 LSE, 93 MBZ 190E 2.6, 96 MBZ C280 Sport, 93 MBZ 400E, 90 MBZ 300ce, 92 MBZ 500SL, 71 MGB-GT, 91 VW Corrado G60

Audi and BMWs don't historically fare well after the maintenance warranties expire. A 18 to 13 year old $3K german car . . . likely thrice used underwear.

LOL Every car I've owned never had a warranty. (I'm the warranty )
I maintain/work on my own cars and have had a few BMWs with high mileage, two with 280k, and one with 235k all still running strong with no major problems

Is your 85 Cossie falling apart?

Blasphemy! Have you considered a 4matic W210? The 3.2 liter V6 is about as fast as your 400e but gets better mileage even with AWD.

Zzzzz

Really just looking for a pick from my list.

I like the W210 4M. My sister has one, but not in my budget this year.
Unless I get lucking and find a decent W202... never know

Although I like our Audi Quattro and consider it good value -it is not a match for the MB wagon 4-Matic I used to own.
Mercedes being much heavier car, with cargo space like double of Audi was using less gasoline than Audi.
Did you check how much timing belt replacement cost on Audi?
Now 14 years old BMW with 235k and CEL on sounds tempting

Well I've done plenty of water pumps & timing belts on E30s bimmers. Was happier when I had my 95 525 and didn't have to worry about belts.
Not familiar with with the V8 bimmers just SB Chevys. But an engine is an engine, not exactly rocket science.
I do like the coil over package for spark plugs, makes it quick and easy.

Parts cost is all I'm worried about because I can fix about anything, with exception to maybe an engine overhaul, but you never know.
Have done gaskets, pumps, brakes, filters, alternators, thermostats, clutches, things of that nature, even OBD I p-chip swaps and dif upgrades from other model car BMWs.

I'm single so I can do with a smaller car. 4 doors do help a little on insurance cost though I do like the added HP of a V8. Audis do suffer on MPG because of their AWD, but my sis 00 E320 4M does really well in that area. So what's Audi's excuse.

If I get the Quattro I'll hold on to it through next winter. If the Audi cab, it will be a fun summer time car then I may hock it after that.

I really like to have different cars to learn from. What some ppl might throw caution signs to I call it typical maintenance.

I do like the 540i 6 spd. Maybe I can talk him down a little in price because of the high mileage and CEL. I already have a good idea of what's causing the fault, but wont know until I drive it.

Whatever the case I'll more than likely have another car by the weekend.

Sounds like a group of high mileage repair prone cars. If you can repair them yourself, then great. But the parts can still be costly. All of these cars can and will easily turn into money pits. Audi's are neither easy to repair nor do they wear well. The interiors on the older cars fell apart fast. They are normally shot after 50-60k miles. The older BMW interiors were no better. Some of them are starting to come to the end of their service life. Most BMW's end up in the junk yard by 300k miles ( I check the odometers every time I go the yard to find parts).

Didn't Audi start producing better quality cars around 1998 ?
An yes I've heard the bad press about some of these cars, that's why I'm considering the ones from an "adult" owner and have a long documented history of what maintenance was done.

There was a slight uptick of quality in the late 90's, yes. But the interior material durability has never been great. Same story with BMW. Cheap or fake thin leather, everything scratches easily, the factory paint was not great..... they just wear like they have double the mileage of comparable MB products from the 90's. Why not consider something like a 94 or 95 E320? It would be in your price range, and its a great car. Reliable, built well and wears VERY well.
