gearbox fault code 017/013 selector lever

Hi everyone,
I have an ongoing problem with my 99 c230k which likes to pop into limp mode when it feels like it and gets stuck in 2nd gear.
i will update the original thread in the 208 section once i get to the bottom of the fault.
but for now, can anyone shed any light on the following fault codes i have:
013 SELECTOR LEVER CODING INVALID
017 SELECTOR LEVER CODING INVALID

codes were read on a snap-on solus pro, and then deleted, car was fine for a couple of hours (stop/start driving) but then decided it was happier in limp mode.
I am assuming this is a fault with the selector mechanism rather than the gearbox itself? is there a switch/sensor in there that would trigger this fault that needs replacing?
someone has mentioned that i can adjust the selector??? does this mean lining up drive/park etc on the selector with drive/park etc on the gearbox? because this all appears to be ok (when i select reverse for example on the selector it selects it perfectly ok in the gearbox)
any help would be appreciated.
