My R129 has staggered Sumitomo tires and they sound like a waterfall, particularly compared to the Michelin MXVs on my W220. When the time comes, I suggest you consider the Michelins. I have used them for years on my big sedans and they are the best compromise I have found for stick, wear, and noise.
Aggressive tread patterns, particularly if there are big water shed grooves to the sidewall, are going to make a bunch of noise relative to "touring" tread patterns.
