Question Key Fob Problems

I just bought a used Mercedes (98 ML 320). I've already read enough of these posts to know that there are a lot of people who would tell me I was a fool for doing so but the price/condition/mileage were just too good to pass up. I couldn't even find a Chevy in this condition for the amount I spent. That said, I'm in the process of changing jobs and money is short so I can't go to the dealer with this problem just yet.

The car came with two key fobs, neither of which worked. The key unlocks the door and starts the car and the electronic locks work from the inside so I didn't worry about it too much, thought it was probably just the batteries. However, I've now changed the batteries and gone through the re-synchronization process outlined in the user manual but it still doesn't work.

Is there another component that might need replacing in the car itself? Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

Key FOB help.

This may sound ridiculous, but stand right next too the drivers door and point the FOB at the handle and hold the open or lock button for about two or three seconds. I have a E-350 and I couldn't get mine to work until I did that. New batteries and all, it still only works when I am right within 10 feet of the car on the driver side. Got nothing to lose if you try it. Let me know.

This may clarify how the remote key should operate.

Locking
When you press lock on your remote key, a radio signal is received in the antenna in the A pillar and passed to the receiver in N10 - the All Activity Module (AAM). The authorisation code is checked, and if valid the following are done electrically:

a) all doors & tailgate that are closed are locked.
b) fuel filler flap is locked.
c) ATA anti theft alarm is activated.
d) when a) & b) are completed, as of 12/99, all turn signal lights will flash 3 times.

Unlocking.
The signal path & validation are identical to the above, and is accomplished in 2 stages.

If the car was previously locked as above, one press of the unlock button will unlock the driver's door and the fuel filler flap. The front interior lamp will light, and the ATA will be inhibited.

When the unlock button is pressed again, the remaining doors and tailgate will unlock. As of 1/3/98, when the unlock button is pressed twice immediately in sequence, the AAM will unlock all doors, the fuel filler flap and the tailgate simultaneously.

As of 12/99, confirmation of unlocking is by momentarily flashing of all turn signal lamps.

Kimse, thanks for the suggestion. I wish it had worked, but it didn't. It really doesn't bother me much except at the darn grocery store. It's a real pain to have your arms full of groceries and try to unlock the door at the same time!

Sounds like the problem is with the car's IR receivers. Check the fuse charts to see if you have a bad fuse or relay. You can also search on the W163 forum for more specifics. Good luck.

There are no IR receivers on this car. Remote control is by RF signals to the AAM, which controls 12 major sub-systems. I doubt if your AAM is faulty, as it controls so much of the car.

Maybe the code & key number stored in the key handle no longer match those in the AAM memory if a previous owner bought a duplicate key. MB STAR diagnosis would check this status.

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on purchasing fine vehicle.
Our 99 ML320 is closing at 120 k and even our son can't make it running bad.
$150 in the repairs is not bad for last 11 years.
For you information, you fob is having 2 separate things in it.
-remote for doors
- ignition chip that disable immobilizer.
Sounds like your ignition works just fine only remote fails. You might try to buy new remote, but those things are not cheap.
Or check for bad connections in your remotes following by synchronization.
