need advice before getting a used benz

long story short. i live in california and because of the harsh rain this past week my car got flooded so i have to buy a new one.

i found a 2001 SLK320 with 42k miles on it for just under $10k. the guy selling it said it's under Kelly Blue Book price because of financial need. I need a car sooner than later because i dont have a working car now. Im going to check out the car this monday or tuesday and would like to know a few things going in to this purchase.

1. what are the most common failures on the SLK320?
2. what are the repair costs like for the (most common) failures?
3. what things should i keep my eye out for when seeing this car for the first time?
4. should i take it to a mercedes dealership for a Pre-purchase inspection or will any AAA-approved car shop pre-purchase inspection do?
5. and last... any other information or advice you can give to me before checking out this car.

I definitely appreciate any feedback. I hope to be joining the benz club soon!

The chassis you are considering is the R170. Go back to the home forum page and scroll down to the Roadster forums. You'll find the R170 forum there. The good folks in that forum all own the same chassis you are considering, and should be better able to answer your questions than this general forum.

The R170 is not a particularly common vehicle, so R170 owners are your best sources of information. The drive train is available in a lot of different MRZ chassis, so it should be reasonably reliable. Beyond that, the roadster forum is your bet.

If you would take time to fill in your profile information it would help.

The first generation SLK was quite an under-whelming car. The build quality was ok at best and the design was fairly bland. The good news is that they were such simple cars (as far as Mercedes go), that they are actually one of the few 2001 Mercedes products that were reliable. For around $10k you can do a whole lot better. You could get into a Honda S2000 or Mazda MX-5 Miata, both of which are about the same size, yet better built, more reliable, and fairly fun to drive.

Be sure the folding top works, as it's a complicated, expensive system.

A PPI is required. Try to find an independent mechanic's shop that specialises in Mercedes. Failing that, find a Mercedes dealer. If you're not bent on getting a sports car, you might look at a late W210: an '01 or '02 E320. You'd be surprised what one of these can do on fast back roads.
