Prospect buyer. Pls advise.
My winter beater decided to quit the other day and I am in the process of finding a suitable vehicle that would be used primarily in the winter time and occasionally the rest of the year. My motorcycle is way more fun when the weather cooperates.
So I went to my trusted dealer (I bought a few cars from him) and since he is not dealing with used cars anymore, sent me to one of his employees in the used car lot.
1999 e320 4matic. 200000km (aprox. 130ooo miles). Car is in pretty good shape. A bit of rust on the crossmembers in the engine bay, a few paint chips, corroded mirrors, the fog lights would need to be replaced if I wanted to use them again. The back seat headrests don't work anymore, but the interior looks brand new. No light on the LCD display (the one with temp settings).
I liked the engine, bit of oil spray around the compartment, traces of oil around the fill cap, a clicking relay next to the abs module that seem to have two vacuum tubes going in and out (what is that anyway?). It kept clicking after the test drive, turned off the engine, started her up again and it was gone. One cat (or maybe both) was rattling. Barely, I had to kneel and listen very carefully. Pretty clunky front right and the brakes seemed a bit too stiff, but apparently these two will be fixed for the certification. The transmission shifted smoothly but it felt a bit laggy and just a bit harsh when coupling at low speed. From a standstill it was like butter.
One owner. Dealer maintained. I did ask for those records and they are coming. I'm pretty curious to see them because it seems like it was a bit neglected for the last 40k or so. New tires on it.
All this for the fabulous amount of 6000 canadian dollars (down 900) from asking just because I know the boss.
Should I bite?
Thanks for your input and appologies for the long post
