problem installing WIS

hi guys, i DL'd WIS and have installed the program as per the accompanying tutorial instalation DVD.
i'm installing it on my old laptop (XP) as it doesnt seem to like vista,
Ive got to the point where i open up PM but rather than go straight into the program manager where i can input the serial number it gives me a warning (in german) which says:

"Bilder werden nicht gefunden
falls sie nach nothmaligem start nicht vorhanden sind
verstandigen sie ihren system-administrator"

i have translated into english and it says:

"Pictures are not found are notify if it after repeated start not available it its system administrator"

I click OK, and it opens DB program manager, but i get a constant egg timer, and no user login screen.

I am logged onto the pc as administrator (although it is just left as "user" without password access) but i do have all admin access.

any ideas why i'm not seeing this user log in screen?

Are you sure your tutorial is on a DVD, might be a CD? In any case you are using an ancient approach, probably an ancient WIS version too if you cannot install it on Vista.

You seem to be coming from the UK, unfortunately there is no cheap option to buy original service DVDs in Europe. I'd suggest doing more homework before you try to solve the current issue.

yes it is an instalation CD not a DVD,
I am installing on XP, as mentioned.
RE: homework...thats what i'm doing here!
I downloaded the program using a link i got from this forum, maybe its an old version, but its the only version i have, i just need information about my car, i've tried to buy a manual, but can't find one anywhere.

I understand your situation. The problem is that all these downloads are illegal as far as I understand and this is why forum members may not be willing to help you (you may be lucky with one who doesn't care about MB copyright, there are such members too, and the forum host is happy about that ).

With homework I meant: "try to find a new guide and try to find a more recent set of DVDs". I think there is a shop that sells copies at a low price, maybe one from the Channel Islands who do not need to care about EU rules.

Please don't concern yourself with a so-called 'copyright' issue on my posts here with WIS images... It has been already discussed with the mods, and we are happy with the current situation.

With respect to installing your WIS on an XP machine, that's what I have done. Admittedly it was a hassle, and took me most of a morning to get it right. Did you configure the 'loopback adaptor'? Maybe you didn't have to, if you are already a network. I have no idea what this 'loopback adaptor' does either.

Anyway, what my instructions made me do, immediately after shutting down screensaver & before inserting my WIS disk 1 and starting the installation.

1. Go to Control Panel and open Add Hardware.
2. At the Wizard, click next.
3. next question - Yes I have, click next.
4. next question - Add a new hardware device. Click next.
5. next question - Install the H/W that... click next.
6. select N/W adaptors. click next.
7. select m/s loopback adaptor. click next.

You get message ' loopback adaptor installed'

I'm not concerned about your postings of WIS screenshots. And I don't think the copyright issue turns to a "so called issue" if the forum mods allow that. I'm a lot more concerned about the forum allowing direct download links for content like navigation DVDs. Other forums that talk more about diagnostic SW and such have been heavily attacked by MB but it is none of my business to babysit things here (but I consider it reasonable to make persons aware of the issue, it isn't my door that they are going to knock on).

Considering your installation instructions, the loop-back adapter is only needed for computers that do not have any network adapter. If one is able to post here, he should have the adapter (it could be a different computer of course but still unlikely). Judged from your posts, you are using the old interface that does not cope well all the info for the latest models (it has other advantages, I'm using both myself). If one browses the WIS discs, it is easy to find several setup.exe files, you might give further guidance there too.

Thanks for your replys guys,
I have to admit i didn't give the copywrite issue a thought and didnt realise that WIS was a heavily copywrited program, i naturaly understand that most programs will have some sort of licence, but i does appear that a lot of users on this forum seem to have the WIS program.
I neither condemn nor condone the issue of copywrite, i prefer to sit on the fence, however as far as my personal circumstances are concerned i am simply after information about my own car so that i can fix it, not for commercial use.
I have tried to obtain workshop manuals, and i certainly dont mind paying for it if i have to so its not a case of trying to get something for free, Haynes dont do one for the CLK Kompressor, (not that i'm a huge Haynes fan), My local dealer was even less helpful (as a lot of dealers probably are when they realise your going to carry out your own repairs) and i have searched the internet for a decent informative workshop manual to no avail.
Whats a guy to do? I am a qualified technician/MOT tester, and therefore strongly begrudge paying someone else to fix my car. I have Autodata which i paid a lot of money for, but it doesnt go into enough detail regarding the auto gearbox.
I havent added the loopback adapter since i already have a network card, but i will try that since it won't hurt the system.

I'm not any expert on copyright issues but I assume a personal copy of a copyrighted disc would be allowed if it is for personal use, not for business and not shared (extensively?).

In the US a copy is available cheap from MBUSA but they don't sell for us in Europe and the discs would not cover all our models. Unfortunately there is no similar option for Europe or most other markets actually. This is why I understand the interest for personal copies but one should still pay attention to the copyright rules and respect MB property.

Do you mean EWA NET password or the Windows XP account password?
