I's bidding on this 1985 300tdt a good idea?

Hi. I'm thinking of bidding on this 300TDT (Ebay Url below). I have heard on these forums to stay away from diesels after 84. This one looks like it is in fine cond. Don't exactly know what it means that the hydraulic load leveling system has been removed for bilsteins here.

Can anyone weigh in on whether this is a good deal? Any maintenance milestones at 200K miles missing here?

Mercedes-Benz : 300-Series : eBay Motors (item 170433109562 end time Jan-23-10 05:15:19 PST)

Thanks!

I would never buy such a car without personal inspection, or at least have good mechanic doing one.
The car looks good, will not comment on the price, but instrument cluster is messed up, what with knowledge about those odometers freezing with the age brings question what is the actual mileage.
When I was buying the exact model years ago -the first thing I requested was engine compression test. I send the seller money for it and was extremely happy with the wagon for 3 years before I replaced it with newer wagon.
Start with studying Carfax.

There is nothing wrong with post 84 diesel w123's; as long as they are well maintained, etc. You want full service history for these cars as well as unmolested condition.

This car is fairly "molested" and shows signs of neglect. If it weren't for the new paint/rust free condition it'd be a sub $3000 car easily. Hack speaker install, SLS removed, broken headlight surround, broken blinker, and overall doesn't look all that "fresh" on the inside. Having said that, the car would probably be priced a few grand higher if it didn't have any of these issues.

You're looking at another $2000 easily in repairs. Which brings the total to $5000. We still haven't addressed the interior, which is rare due to 1) wagon specific parts and 2) blue wagon interior parts.

So for $5000 you can find a nicer wagon, no broken lights, etc., w the functioning SLS, original stereo equipment, etc.

Nearly 800 page views and no one has bid the minimum...which should tell anyone that its overpriced...seller should be lucky to get $3000 for the car.

Also, you should post this question in the w123 forum as it will get viewed by folks who know these cars inside and out.

The "engineering" behind "converting" the self-leveling suspension is strictly "shadetree."

There is no officially engineered procedure for doing this, and the chances of it being done satisfactorily are about zip.

I don't know if the prices on those cars went up, but I sold my 85 wagon about 5 years ago for $3000. It had few oil sweatings, but was in perfect mechanical condition and the engine had excellent compression with very low blow-by.
Maybe I shoulda keep it?

I agree on PO butchering the suspension.

Prices seem to be all over the board with the wagons. A lot of folks with beaters still want $3000 for them, while really nice drivers with lowish miles can fetch double or triple that amount.

Regardless, there's a good chance your old wagon is still worth $3000, depending on condition.
