There is no real protection.
In US the diesel pumps most of the time are separated from gas pumps and have green nozzles.
But different states, or different station brands can have different colors.
I remember in Europe pumps with 4 hoses hanging in even spacing, so the only distinction was color and signs. Too many people fueling locally memorize the color of the nozzle and than going to different area are surprised that the color means something different.
Than I heard tens of stories from Oregon, where state requires attendant to fill up that lot of diesel cars are getting filled up with gas. Some comes to rare diesel ATV.
Nothing beats being focus on what you are doing and reading the signs.
