Smile Can a remote be cloned?

I am new to this forum and would ask for your help.
I recently purchased a 1997 S320...beautiful but with one issue...the remote key.
The prior owner must have run over it, not just ugly...oooogly.
New key here in New York 175-200 dollars. Checked E-Bay and purchased an almost new remote from a man in Chicago. The bad news is when it arrives it will not operate my Benz. Here's where I got smart. Someone in the Reich had to put it together, I changed the old ones batteries and came up with the idea...could the innards be switched...or...could it be cloned with the original oooogly remote.

Please put on you thinking caps, and I can be reached at (yes I once was blind but now I've been found).

Thanks in advance....rick in Syracuse New York

I don't see why you can't swap out the plastic non-electronic parts to help rid yourself of the oogly part. I think when you start swapping innards, you are likely to run into the dreaded "hun-engineering" penchant for putting a stymie on what seems like a good idea. I don't know why the car would mind a new case on the old key.

People have switched the outer case of a worn out key (broken buttons or what have you) for a better one and written it up somewhere on this forum. Try the search function for your car/key first, the W140, since these keys have evolved over time.

The innards can be swapped, the earlier remotes can be synced to the cars
