C280 w202 Ignition park lock cable

Hi all ....this is my first post...sorry it has to be a call for help

I have just had the dreaded "key won't turn in the ignition" saga which ended in the use of a power tool to remove the ignition

I have now put in the new (well new to me ) ignition and attached the park lock cable and the car started fine but wont come out of park. If I remove the cable from the ignition and operate the cable with my thumb it works & the stick will come out of park but not when the cable is screwed into the ignition.

Am I missing something here??

I am hoping that some one far more knowledgeable than me has a solution & I thank you all kindly for taking the time to read my post.

Dave: I have no special knowledge here... just a WIS on DVD. But I noted the following when looking up your W202. Does this sound familiar?
Perhaps you need to adjust the shift lock gap (A) to 0.2mm as described below.

Remedies for electronic ignition switch (EIS) malfunctions.

Problem:
Key inserted in electronic switch (EIS) can be turned between positions 1 and 3; however cannot be removed and engine cannot be started.

Cause 11:
Defective shift lock adjustment on vehicles with automatic transmission.

Remedy 11:
1. Check shift lock. If not OK -
2. Adjust shift lock.
