I've owned a 1994 C280 for about 9 years now. My wife and I bought it as a car for her, and she really likes it. Its a great car, if it works.

We've had more problems with this car than any car I have ever owned. I would've sold it a long time ago except that my wife loves it like a piece of jewelry.

I don't like it, I dont like Mercedes as a brand, and I CERTAINLY dont care for the flagrantly dishonest dealership in my area. This will be the first and last Mercedes I ever own. That is quite clear.

The reason I'm here is that I'm stuck fixing this thing myself on a monthly basis, and I want to learn from others and share what I have learned, which after all this time is quite a bit. Except for three jobs, I've done all the work myself. A lot of work! This car is down so often that I bought a Pontiac Grand Am for my wife to drive when the mercedes is offline. The C280 is in my garage right now while I replace the roof liner and repair the sunroof. Its available for her use on average about 3 weeks out of each month.

Some of our financial obligations will be ending in about 2-3 years from now and at that time I will easily bribe my wife with a brand new vehicle and immediately either sell this car or set it on fire, whichever seems to give me more satisfaction at the time.

Thanks for having me as a member. We are here to help each other. I am also a member of CLUB202.COM. I cant imagine owning this car without the support of others in the same situation.

Here's a partial list of what has failed:

Shifter bushing failed two times. Replaced twice.

AC compressor failed, replaced it.

Wiring harness shorted under hood, requiring $4000.00 in repairs to damaged wiring, CAN modules, throttle body, and smog pump which were all replaced.

Gas line ruptured, spraying fuel everywhere under the car. Replaced line.

Both O2 sensors replaced.

MAF sensor failed and replaced.

Vacuum distribution block cracked, had to replace.

Vacuum solenoids for climate control failed in-dash. Bypassed them.

Many burnt out lights in dashboard.

Radio volume control failed.

Power antenna failed, found cracked solders on drive module and reflowed them.

Wipers failed, found cracked solders on relay module and reflowed them.

Wipers failed, wiper linkage came apart and chewed itself up. Had linkage welded.

Cracked radiator overflow tank. Replaced.

Broken pulley tensioner. Still broken but has enough tension.

Water pump failed. Replaced it.

Thermostat failed. Replaced it.

Temp sensor failed for coolant temp guage. Replaced.

Draglink bearing failed, replaced drag link.

Left and right lower control arm bushings went bad.Replaced all.

Front shocks creaking badly, replaced shocks.

Headliner falling down. Working on that now.

Windshield washer pump failed, replaced it.

Sunroof out of alignment. Repaired damaged sliders.

Right front bearing developed lots of play, I tightned the castle nut down a bit and let it ride.

Steering has loud squeak if telescoped all the way down, have to move it partway up.

EVAP purge valve stuck open. Bypassed it.

Upper front right ball joint making groaning noise, replaced right upper control arm.

Driveshaft flex disks cracked, replaced both flex disks.

Kindred soul...

Nick, I am you if I keep my 2003 C240 for another 8 years. I have not had a car which created such high expectations and such low fulfillment of them.

I won't go though my litany of issues. I can't fix stuff myself any more, to my dismay, as I'm without a garage for the first time in my adult life, so we wind up living with problems I'd normally fix, but don't trust to a paid shop. And I have not had experiences with the local dealerships that would lead me to unquestioningly trust them, either.

So just don't open the sunroof, for example. It probably won't close. Iit's never been synchronized right, and the dealer didn't have any detectable effect on it.

Fortunately, my wife likes but doesn't love the car, so it's going to go away soon, for something more reliable and hopefully similarly quiet and comfortable.

Commiserations. Enjoy the ride. It's a good investment to keep your spouse happy.

Nice to meet you howard in this virtual space.

There is a forum here that has local recommendations for independant repair shops by region. Maybe you want to look at that and see if someone is close to you that has a good reputation. The few times I farmed out a job for lack of a press or special tools, I got a fair price that would have been double probably at a dealership. Just a thought.

Good luck.
