1995 S500 Airbag Certification

Hey everyone!

The certification for the airbags on my 1995 S500 is expiring this year. I am curious what an airbag re-certification entails. I do believe that it is important to have done but I don't like going into my dealers repair shop blind. Any input out there?

At least for Mercedes, "recertification" means installing a new airbag, which aren't cheap, but it's a key component in the car's passive safety restraint system, so it's nothing to "cheap out" on.

The reasons for the certification is aging of the materials. It can't be reversed no matter how much we would like. Same goes for the tires, where over 6 years old should be disposed even if they were never used. Compact spares have thicker rubber and are not exposed to UV, so they have longer shelf life.
Knowing the prices -replacing all airbags on vehicle older than 10 years will likely exceed value of the vehicle. Not too many owners worry about it.

Personally I wouldn't worry about it, IMHO it's a big CYA for mercedes. To my knowledge Mercedes is the only mfg I am aware of that has an experiation/recertification date on airbags. I've had GM, Chrysler, Honda and other vehicles of similar vintage with air bags and there is no recertification required. Currently between my kids and us we have a 95 S-10, 97 Accord, 2004 Silverado, 97 Chrysler, 2005 chrysler, 2004 Dodge PU, 2005 Civic, 2003 Dakota PU. NONE of them have anything about recertification on the airbags. Or if there is anything, it is really hidden. No mention in the owners manual, no sticker on the doors like my 420, no sticker near the airbags.
