Transmission dilema: used or rebuild

Dear All
This is my dilema since my trans was damaged I strongly believe I will need replacement. I am curious what is the forum preference used 70-80 KM trans about $850 shipped or rebuild for $1400-1600, price is big part of my decision but looks like there is a lot of mixed opinions on rebuild ones. Can you guys recommend trusted source of used trans for 1994 E420? I will really appreciate some info as well as info for "normal" price for replacement trans in my car. I live in Naperville, IL 60563 so some locals shops or trusted source will be great. Marry X-Mass to all.

You have wrong starting point IMHO
Good rebuild should have 2-3 years warranty. If it is not coming with it, that means you are dealing with crooks who sell you washed used transmission as a rebuild.
Used come with just days of warranty. Personally if I couldn't confirm reliability of the rebuilder I would go for used one. They last 500, 000 on most cars.

The trans for $2500 with installation has 3 years warranty the thing is the price is double for used one also with installation and money are tight for now. In this case I will rather choose used one but have to find reliable place to buy one. Shop from ebay give 30 days warranty and have over 98% positive feedback so so far it looks good. Let me know guys what do you think.

98% pos. feedback for proffesional seller is bad.
Read what the complains are about?
You don't want to pay for transmission and its installation and then when it doesn't work have unanswered emails to the seller.

Durring slowing down trans went to neutral mode and I was not able to move forward after that. Reverse is normally working. Trans fluid was OK (I finally chceked) thing is that after car stood for 2 days and I start the engine and there was bang as I believe there is good chance for mechanical problem from this point on. Since fluid was thick from cold temps and could "took" broken part and throw it on other mechanical rotating parts and create the noise which I heard. The ebay seller is top rated and I checked again 99.8% positive feedback I think is worth of try. Please guys send me some more info since I will have to act fast really soon

99.8% is better than you told us before so I think he is worth the risk. Try to see what BBB says about the business. Also a friend of mine bought a rebuilt trans. from Jasper not long ago but for an American car. They are very reputable so you might check with them too.

Good idea so far I opt for uset 87K trans there is even good chance I will drive 3hrs t pick it up tomorrow but I am ot sure they have it uninstalled already so who knows doeas anybody know what is part number or any other identification I should be looking for visible on the body of trans? Will follow up shortly. Is $400 fair price for removing and reinstallation of trans in my car? I will check Jasper too.
