Hello from Los Angeles (county)
New owner. I bought a 1999 SLK in Firemist red with sport package. It had a lot of miles, 173K ... yes, if you've been looking at SLKs in the area in the last maybe 2 months you might have seen it - LoL maybe no one cares - but it is a memorable number I thought as being the highest miles I've ever seen for sale.
Anyhow, I am reading up on the different topics available on this site. You know this could take forever =)
I have some work needed on the car - no surprise - I expected that when I test drove it. In some sense it does feel like driving a 10 year old car. Oh but the outside - the paint and wheels look really good! I hope people don't think I have a lot of money because my car looks so good. I always tell them hey it's a 10 year old car and it's creaky... I just read why it's creaky and know the easy fix now. I have numerous issues with the car and getting them worked on - tomorrow I pick which to get worked on first at the shop.
Always liked how the SLK looks. If I were a little crazier I would buy 3 of them... And there would be a crazy plan like this - I'd buy a 1999, a 32 AMG, and a manual maybe 2001 SLK320. In this case the 99 could be an automatic perhaps with the sports package (lol). Actually I'd get a 4th one that's a manual ... any year but a good year might be 2004, either 4 or 6 cylinder.
Then I would sell 2 of them (presumably I would know how to sell a car) and keep the two that I like the best. Then over the years I would sell one and end up keeping my favorite as I go through different (non-SLK) 2nd cars. I like this plan. The keep one forever plan.
There are so many good variations I would have been happy picking randomly from 10 different ones. For example from my research, 2001 model year had suspension upgrades, 2004 has the best emissions, and pre-2001 the 4 cylinder has the best mileage -maybe 1998 1999? not sure on 2000 mileage. The 6 cylinder is smoother and has a little more power but you can't claim Kompressor unless you get the SLK32. And then there is the automatic vs manual choice. =)
Too long an introduction?
