^ That doesn't mean he knows how to fix transmissions. Best to pick up a reman or good used if you get that lucky.

I bet the mechanic immigrated from Germany long before computers were invented and automatic transmission on Mercedes become widely used
I would have to agree than Germans are genetically more honest people than average.
Now the transmission quit pulling and you don't check the fluid?
If you engine stops suddenly, you don't check if there is gas in it?

Please keep in mind, and explain to your lovely wife, that buying another used car could have the same or worse problems the day after you buy it, or a year later. You know your old Benz and the problems it had and what it needed in general. I say if you can get into a new car with a full warranty you're better off than fixing this car, but if not then put the money into the transmission and know you are in a car that shouldn't need any other major expenses for some time.

Did you check the forums for other transmission threads, I remember reading elsewhere where some folks have minor issues that cause the transmission to fail but are not catastrophic mechanical failures. Maybe items like sensors, vacuum lines, etc. Worth checking into, or at very least once they crack your trans open they could verify.

Good luck my friend, I feel your pain but hope it doesn't dampen your Holiday spirits too much. Suffering in life only means that you are still blessed with a life in which to have these experiences.

You guys are right mechanic is old immigrant Long story short trans is done I just got a call, bent is broken whatever does it mean. I have no clue in this case. I guess I will try to sell it as is or for parts but dont even have garage to part it out. He offer me $300 which I personally think is a joke since interior is in perfect shape and engine still running but what are my other option - not to many. This is SAD, Idea to take another loan for 12000 is not funny either. I found another E430 1999 with 68000M = $6000 but my second half is not so sure.
I guess is the time to post something about car for sale in Naperville, IL

Try to find out the exact diagnosis, it still might not be ruined. Has he taken the transmission apart to look? The 1999 E430 for $6000 doesn't sound too bad.

If he offered you 300 for it. He might be interested in the car. The car might have cheap fix. I seen mechanics do that. I would get a second mechanic to take a look at it. I used to work in a dealership as a tech, and if I tell the stories on things that went down you wouldn't believe me. Have someone else take a look at it. You might even thank me.

"Bent is broken" would point to a language barrier as well. I'd consider it inappropriate for the diagnosing mechanic to make an offer on the car, sort of a conflict of interest, unless you asked him for a bid.

I also believe your mechanic is looking to buy your car to repair and resell it. I would find another indie mechanic who can swap a used transmission into your car.
