Electrical problems...

I own a 2000, 230 SLK that has just lapped 67,000 on the odometer. I’ve never had a problem with the car unit I discovered the dead battery on a dark morning. After the jump-start, I investigated and found that the headlight delay to be the problem. Although I switch off the headlights, they stay on. I’m disconnecting the battery whenever I park the car, which leads to my next question. The radio requires a code to re-activate, and I don’t have the factory manual. Any Ideas?

Not sure about your R170, but on my R171 headlight delay is programmable yes or no via the instrument cluster. If yours isn't, you should probably replace the relay, which I'd guess is the problem.

Go to your dealer with VIN and proof of ownership and they will give you the radio code. Alternately, it could be written somewhere on a previous service invoice.

Cars that require a radio code came new with a radio code card. It's about the size of a credit card but I didn't get one with my used Benz. The instructions tell you not to keep it in the car so many are probably lost or mis-placed before the car enters the used market. You really ought to order an owner's manual before they are out of print. MBUSA sells them (800-FOR-MERC). Good luck.

Any MB dealer will give you radio code for free if you drive in with certificate of ownership.
I write the code on certificate. This way is not in the car and not likely I will loose it, automatically giving it to new owner.
With the lights, the electrical relays very seldom fail. Most likely computer controlling the relay.
Good luck.
