E320 2001 Rear Brake Light

When I step on the brake, sometimes the malfunction message pops up saying to check my bulbs. My driver side rear brake light will stop working. Although the bulb wasn't blown, I switched it, but it didn't help. Any idea's where I should look next?

Thank you,

----Tom

Might be your socket or brake light switch. Check the socket for corrosion first, it seems to be a common problem.

The socket doesn't have any corrosion, and appears to be in good condition. I'm told the brake light switch may not be the problem, as only the driver side light goes out. If there is something not visible with the socket, any suggestions online to purchase one.

Thank you and happy holiday.

I see what you mean, one light out can't be the switch. As far as a source, look in the Sponsor section and try to buy from one of them. All Mercedes is one I can think of.

Happy Holidays to you too!

You're welcome, and one more thing: You have a W210 as I do. We have a dedicated forum for that chassis here withing the sedans section. Have a look through our stickys and you'll find a lot of DIY information, including trouble shooting the defective lamp warning. Again, the sockets are a very common problem.

Another thought: Could the new bulb be defective (out of box failure)? I suppose you noticed that the pins on the OE bulb have an odd configuration. The brake light bulb (passenger side) I recently replaced is a Sylvania 7225 LL (long life). There had been a Philips in there but I couldn't read the number or find one here.

Something else I just remembered: When I first replaced the bulb I still saw a defective lamp message. I think I removed and replaced it about 3 times before the message went away. I don't know this, but I think R/R the bulb cleaned some corrosion in the socket. As you reported, I couldn't see anything wrong either.

Some one told me that I have a w211. What is the difference between the (2) models? I'll post/check to that section.

Thanks again. I enjoy the car, the site and of course the help.

In USA, W210 was the E-class sold '96-'02 ('03 for wagons)

In USA, W211 was the E-class sold from '03-'09.

Check the socket, the start going after the switch, or wiring. Do the easy stuff first.
