You're welcome, and one more thing: You have a W210 as I do. We have a dedicated forum for that chassis here withing the sedans section. Have a look through our stickys and you'll find a lot of DIY information, including trouble shooting the defective lamp warning. Again, the sockets are a very common problem.
Another thought: Could the new bulb be defective (out of box failure)? I suppose you noticed that the pins on the OE bulb have an odd configuration. The brake light bulb (passenger side) I recently replaced is a Sylvania 7225 LL (long life). There had been a Philips in there but I couldn't read the number or find one here.
Something else I just remembered: When I first replaced the bulb I still saw a defective lamp message. I think I removed and replaced it about 3 times before the message went away. I don't know this, but I think R/R the bulb cleaned some corrosion in the socket. As you reported, I couldn't see anything wrong either.
