clk 320 tip tronic intermitant fault

my 1999 12000 mile clk has just developed an intermitant gear change problem. when diving in s mode if im say doing 60mph and kick down or changes down on hill to 4 or 3 rd it wont change back up again just sticks in 3rd or 4 th till i stopthen wont go above 3rd gear althiugh still reads d on dash. also does the same if i change down manualy with tiptronic go back into drive reads d but wont change up. but then if i change from s into w mode on the move changes into top perfectly every time.. then next day is fine again also no problems at all if i drive in w mode all the time. really strange any ideas please.

Did you mean to type 120,000 miles? If so, have you ever had the ATF changed?

I would start by changing your transmission fluid and filter. If you're lucky, you have a torque converter drain and you can replace most of it. If not, replace as much as you can by dropping the pan and add back what you are able to drain from the pan. Wipe the pan out with a clean lint-free cloth to remove any gook and look for metal shavings. You might have to pour what you get through a strainer or cheese cloth. Be sure to use a MB compatble fluid for a 722.6 tranny.

Good luck.

Only working properly in W mode is a bit of a mystery to me as well. That might mean there is something wrong electronically in the tranny or in it's control unit (TCU).

Yes... and while the pan is off, the electrical connector seal can be checked for leakage.
