This is a rant. You have been warned! If you aren't aware of the "rule of the road" I'm explaining, please learn and practice it. It is called "lane courtesy" and is actually much more important than the speed limit. The Germans, who made and engineered our brilliant Mercedes cars also made and invented "lane courtesy" when they built their system of Autobahns (which our interstate system was based on).
Keep RIGHT except to pass, AKA, slower traffic keep right! I have become fed up with self-righteous people who purposely
prevent the smooth flow of traffic by blocking the left lane and run immediately next to other vehicles, or hog the left lane when they aren't passing a soul.
These left lane hogs are usually doing EXACTLY the speed limit and think to themselves that "the guy following me in that Mercedes has no right to pass me, because I'm doing the speed limit, I'm not going to allow him to break the law".
In many states, it is ILLEGAL to drive at any speed
in the left lane if you aren't in the process of overtaking a slower moving vehicle in the right lane PERIOD.
Let me clear, I drive the speed limit 95% of the time, I have NO problem with people who choose not to drive the speed limit (higher or lower), because when the "keep right" rule is practiced, EVERYONE GETS THEIR WAY. The slow pokes can stay right, and the speed demons can pass. Everybody wins and the roads are safer as a result. But when the rule isn't practiced the smug self-righteous people block the speed demons who eventually become very irate, and often start to tailgate, honk their horn, flash their lights or even pass on the shoulder, all of which are EXTREMELY DANGEROUS, but can be avoided if the left lane hog simply moved over.
The Germans have figured this out... which is why they can have safe roads with no speed limits. Germans KNOW that if they camp out in the left lane doing 75 that there is a real possibility of a Ferrari or Lambo doing 200 behind them...so they keep their @sses right for their own protection and the protection of the supercar driver. It should be no different here.
To those of you who will not obey proper lane courtesy: You have no right to use the interstate highway system! There are many important rules for driving on an interstate, and the speed limit is just one of those many. I'm done.
