I don't buy snow tires for the Benz because I have other cars and don't need to drive the MB in wintry conditions. As you have observed, these cars w/o snow tires are dogs in the winter, as I suspect most other front engine RWD cars are. Additional weight in the trunk is bound to help somewhat, but if your girlfriend has to drive that car, do her a favor and advise she put some snows on it. Check TireRack.com, they have a number of customer reviews that are worth a look.
I'd also advise against running on E85. Her owner's manual might say the car will run on it, but I'm betting they recommend 91 octane, with 10% ethanol, or hopefully you can buy the unadulterated stuff where you are. I can't any longer and it upsets me to no end.
