Check Engine Light

Hi Everybody

I have a merc s class 02 plate 2.8 litre petrol. the vents of today

started the car, realised petrol was very low so decided to drive to the pstrol station, on the way the car started to jerk and ''check engine light'' started to come on and flashed.

Then the vehicle stopped, luckily just arrived at the petrol station. Filled the car up and started nicely after few times after jerking.

The car is running fine again, but the 'check engine light' is still showing on the dashboard.

Anyone experience this or has any info on this? Hopefully the light will go away, dont know?

Please help?

I would have the codes read as soon as possible. A flashing CEL means a serious issue. It might be a fluke in your case since the car seems fine now, but I wouldn't take that chance. Has it flashed any more or is it solid now? Good luck and welcome to the forum.

My guess is that you were quite low on fuel and starved the engine, resulting in serious misfires, which caused the flashing CEL as the ECU shut them down. (You may also have a dirty fuel filter that impeded the flow near the end of the tank, so perhaps check/change that.)

Assuming my guess is correct, fueling up resolved the immediate issue (particularly since it is now running okay) and you now have a steady, not flashing, CEL. So drive normally for a few days and you should see the CEL go out on it's own. If not then I would get the codes read.

I am with Greg on the issue clearing itself.
CEL once triggered require some time to reset after fixing the problem. After replacing bad MAF all I had to do was restart the engine 7 times, what took 10 seconds.
Some codes require combination of restarts and driving to clear. Bad part MB doesn't post any info what it takes, but you will know in another day or 2.
