ML320 cranking but not catching spark

I have a 99 ML320 in very good condition and reluctant to just let it go, particularly since I invested a new trani about 2 years ago. Lately, the engine was trying to turn and I get cranking when I turn the key, but it wont catch a spark.

The battery is fairly new. As is the fuel pump and wires and plugs were done about 1 1/2 years ago.

I've gotten the run-around and thought I would ask those of you on this site. The indication, after much research, is that it could be the ignition coils. Has anyone else had a similar problem? How difficult are these to replace? Would have to replace all 6? I am assuming that the wire kit I had put in 16 months ago should still be good.

Any information you can give would be appreciated.

Hi, Bill.

The first thing that comes to mind for me is the Crank Position Sensor. Fairly cheap and not an awful DIY. For six coils to go at once would be the height of bad luck, and the CPS is a common issue.

Thanks Greg.

The dealer sounded pretty-much "matter of fact". I wasnt buying in because they seem to be more interested in selling me a new car. I do know this... about 2 years ago, some moron changed the oil in it and did not put on the filter properly. Needless to say, the oil started squirting up onto the manifold and caught on fire. I pulled over immediately and fortunately happened to have the extinguisher from my boat in my car. This is about the only time I have ever had an extinguisher with me.

I did have some damage, and I replaced all the wires, plugs, etc. Is it possible that that could have made the coils brittle? If so, can this be determined by visually inspecting them? Are they easily accessible and easy to replace?

Crank sensor is a common problem. Also, there is a red light that flashes on the dash if it is a drive authorization problem. I forget exactly what the light does to tell you but maybe someone else will. Could need a key or the ring around the ignition switch. Try another key if you have one.
