1989 Mercedes 300E Power

Hi all,

I've been eyeing up a Mercedes 300E in a local garage, and actually went for a test drive in it this morning. I have to say that it was fantastic for a 20 year old car - everything was in mint condition and it felt really quick.

But therein lies the problem: the dealer is claiming that it is the 275bhp model. However, after some extensive online research, I couldn't find any reference to one that had that much power from a 3.0L engine.

So my question is: Am I missing something and there really was one that had 375bhp, or is the dealer just pulling a fast one?

If it makes any difference, it is a 5-speed manual, and is apparently a Limited Edition (it had a very fancy-sounded name on the end, but I forget what it was. I'll update this post if I remember to look later).

Anyway, thanks in advance to anyone that can shed some light on this.

EDIT: I believe it was a Carat Duchatelet.

I believe the M103 engine produces about 180 hp or so.

Hm, according to Google they make armored cars. Which would be a good reason to give it a more powerful engine.

Ask the selling dealer what exactly is it. As posted standard MB engine has less power, but there are several tuners using MB base for making much peeper car.
AMG and Brabus are the mostly know names, but I bet there is much more.

If it has an in-line 6 cylinder engine, you don't have 275 horsepower. If the car isn't badged AMG or Brabus somewhere (trunk, dash, gauges, valve cover), and it doesn't have wide tires and wheels, it almost certainly isn't a tuner car. Even tuner cars didn't pick up a 50% horsepower increase 20 years ago.

A stock 300E would have plenty of scoot, so its quickness isn't something that would only come from a tuner.

Your dealer is either trying to blow smoke up your skirt or he has no idea what he is talking about. Either way, he isn't somebody to trust. Do your own due dilligence with this car. You can enter the VIN on this website Mercedes-Benz Club Russia | Mercedes-Benz / VIN
and it will tell you exactly how this car came off the assembly line. It won't reflect any tuner activity after the car was produced, but it will tell you what the car was when it was born.

Good luck.

If its fast enough for you who cares how much hp it has? But from an accuracy standpoint, the 400e (V8) made 275 hp but the six cylinders did not. I would be more concerned with the condition of the engine trans, etc. I know you said it was "mint" but a 300E that hasn't been cared for for 19 years but that has been shaped up by a used car dealer will still look fantastic. The interiors on these cars don't show their age unless you know what to look for. It isn't uncommon that dealers rolled back the odometers on these cars because they held up so well cosmetically.
