MB Star Diagnostics from China. Beware!

Guys,

I have bought the Star diagnosis unit from china/hong kong for 550USD. My findings of the unit however are terrible. I ordered it without the laptop as I already have the correct notebook. The unit I received looked very professional as you can see in the pictures! It even looks like an original Actia unit, but it isnt!I could not get this cheap chinese knock off to work. I wasted more than a full weekend on this without any comms going to my car.

The preinstalled hard drive I received was also full of virusses. I had to remove these and repair windows to get it going. There was no keygen for the WIS and DAS software. After many hours of searching I eventually found a keygen on some dodge russian site... which worked! After that I could get the WIS and DAS started but I could not get the star unit to communicate with my com port 2. Again after many hours spent, my computers com port 2 tested fine, I've tested it with other hardware using com 2 which works like a charm. I've even triend an external USB-2-serial converter. Without any luck. If you plug the star unit into you car the Green LED lights up on the star, so that works. When I try the compact port tester it gives random errors. (its only when you plug out the unit from your com port that you dont get random errors but just the same error )

Conclusion: So any one that wants to import these knock off units from china. BEWARE. You are going to waste a lot of time and effort for nothing. Not even to mention the money.

Sorry to hear this horror story and I wonder who it is that is making these? The multiplexer looks suspect here. I get mine from a place in Shanghai and it works like a dream, even has the add ons.

But when all said and done, you knew it was a copy and there are risks with anything that is copied, for instance I would not was my time buying a copy CD here as it would probably damage my PC.

Not using a T30 notebook. Using my old A-open notebook. It does have a dedicated RS232 port.

Is there anything on the IBM T30 that makes it different from any other laptop with a dedicated RS232 port? What I'm trying to say is will the DAS only work on an IBM T30 notebook?

The chinese programm is based on the IBM T30 and without this it will not function properly. So this is where your problem comes in. You decided to use your own computer and tried to cut the cost but ended up with a waste of time unit. Talk to the people who supplied it and maybe this can be ironed out for a few dollars more.

So what you are telling me, if I take the hard drive and pop it in a T30 it will work?!

I dont understand this as a RS232 port is pretty standard. Signal levels etc.

I am no expert on this but the guys in Shanghai are telling me that it requires the IBM hard drive and the IBM T30 computer to operate the software correctly with the multiplexer on line.

All my time in China I have had to use IBM for best results, with STAR and with the BMW Group Tester I, Landrover/Rangerover and Porsche.

MMmmmm.... Interesting, the hard drive they sent me is a toshiba drive (this should absolutely make no difference). As for the laptop, I did computer hardware development in the military and as long as you have a dedicated RS232 port(one with its own IRQ, onboard integrated) you are fine. I know the USB-2-Serial ones definitely has timing issues. So I would understand if it wouldnt work with that. I have sent an email to the seller in Shenzeng, hopefully I'll get it working!?

MB Star Compact3 2009 (7 cables )-OBDfocus Technology CO.,LTD.
These guys claim you can move the hard drive to any pc....

I'll keep you up to date on the status from the seller.
