'85 300 Turbo Diesel Drive Shaft Noise?

My 300 TD has a sound I can't figure out.
A rhythmic "clanking" coming from under the car, on the drivers side it seems, behind the drivers seat.
Clanking only happens when load is applied. Heard mostly when going slow or uphill, and only on acceleration (when load is applied). Once speed is increased the rhythm gets faster and softer, just not clanking as hard.
From the sound, I would guess that the drive shaft is wobbling and hitting something next to it.
One really strange thing about it is that the sound only happens after I've driven 60 miles or so at one time. No sound, then slowly it starts. Then when I slow down or go up a hill or something it can get quite loud, and scary, like something's going to break soon.
Once I've stopped and the car rests for a few hours the noise is gone.....untill I do another 60 mi. + trip.
Any ideas?

15 years old car?
Time for inspecting flex disks. Go to W210 section to find pictorials on the job.

Also check the center bearing, you'll see it once you get under the car. The bearing is surrounded by rubber, inspect there and the flex discs.

Thanks so much for the quick responses.
~Actually a 30 year old car.
I got the car up today and checked the flex plates and the center bearing. Everything looked solid. THe rubber was all looking fairly new, and the shaft didn't have any side to side play or back and forth. Not really sure what I'm feeling for down there as far as the movement goes. It seems they have been replaced at some point, I assume due to the white paint marks on the flanges.
I'm not discounting that the noise might be coming from one of these points, but i can't see or feel any obvious wear. I suppose I'll have a pro take a look.
I still don't get why the noise would only happen after 60 miles or so.
By the way, I don't mean 60 mph, I mean 60 miles of ground covered before the noise starts.
Has anyone ever heard of the Level Control System making a sound like this when the fluid is low. My resevoir is low, and I've had a hard time finding the oil for it.
Thanks for the help!
