Removing gearshift knob in 1997 C-280

My shift knob needs to be replaced. I found one that I like at Performance Products (Mercedes Parts and Accessories – Mercedes Wheels, Car Covers, Floor Mats, Steering Wheels and More from Performance Products:) but don't know how to get the old one off. Can anyone help?

Thanks,
Don

Untighten the plastic piece right below the shift knob. It will then come off by pulling up.

Thanks Musikmann, I tried that and it did loosen, but I could do nothing from there. To make sure I understand, there are 2 pieces, one is about 2 mm the other about 1 cm. They were loose and flopping around and I pulled up but nothing happened. I hate to go the $$$ dealer so would appreciate any clarification of your instructions.

You're welcome Don but I can't. What I did was perform a search on the W202 forum and copy/pasted my post. There were several other threads that popped up but I only looked at a couple of them. I think on my car (never removed mine) a counter-clockwise rotation of the shaft is also necessary. The search terms I used were shift knob.
