300D Transmission Rebuild

I came across a parts car, a 1983 300D in decent condition, runs great and no rust, but it has the dreaded transmission issue ---- it won't shift above 2nd gear (shift from 1st to 2nd, reverse is fine).

The shops are quoting me $2500 to $3200 for a full rebuild. From everything I've read and the folks I've talked to, that's a reasonable quote. And I know the main shop I spoke with to be reputable.

Just fishing for general ideas about other options, as in, are there any? Has anyone attempted a rebuild on their own, or does that require a prohibitive number of specialty tools? Is there any possibility that something less than a full rebuild might address the issue.

I'm not into the car for much, so I'll probably part it out, but thought I would throw the topic up on the Benz Board and see what people thought....

Thanks!

Knowing the location would be helpful. In my area the car in working condition would be worth about the quoted transmission cost.
Are you getting the car for free?

That is really a chunk of change. Might want to look into purchasing a reman unit and installing yourself.

I'm in Austin, Texas. And yes, I got the car practically for free.

If you get the car running it could be pretty rewarding, but paying the shop makes no economical sense.
I would search the net for rebuild, or running transmissions. If you can get one for few hundreds-you have good ride for less than a thousand.
