I find it interesting that virtually every mfg, including mercedes, considers oil consumption of less than 1 qt/600 miles "normal" for any warranty claim, when "typical" consumption is < 1qt/5000 miles or more. My e420 with 120K miles uses way less than <1qt in 7500 miles, and my silverado is the same wth 90K on it. My accord with 130K was about 1qt/3000 miles. So while you consumption is within the "normal" range it certainly isn't typical.

If your consumption went up suddenly I'd look for either a oil leak or something the the crankcase ventilation system plugged. The noisy lifter may be related to your problem.

By the way, I seldom put <20K miles/year on any cars I've owned, If you enjoy the car DRIVE IT! they aren't pieces of artwork for gods sake.

I use Penzoil Platinum and I can go the full 5,000 miles between oil changes without losing hardly any. I have a C280 though so it may be different.

......Regardless of the vehicle year----Good advice is"See a M.B. dealer"---If your dealer is not satisfying you,try another one ! They keep mine in top shape ! Very few mechanics can ,or will service a M.B. properly......and keep on driving it,if you can't drive it----what's it good for ?

Thanks for all the advice and opinions. It is going to the dealer on Monday, they think the noisy lifter is caused by a broken tube or line that injects oil on the lifter. They want to open it up and check. There are no oil leaks, the engine is dry, and no smoke or excessive residue in tailpipes. I will keep you posted. Any other input would be appreciated.

There are links to MB oil approvals in stickies in W210 section.
I know owners of AMG models are too busy polishing their mufflers to worry about stuff like that.
So per latest publication the best oil for gas engine is Mobil1 0W-40, while for diesels it is Mobil1 ESP formula M mostly common in 5W-40.
Older manuals would list older generation of oils and should be ignored at present time.
