Own a 240d concidering buying a 300d

I have a 79 240d that I love, but I have two beefs with it. Winter starting and freeway driving. Last winter it not start well below 15 degrees with out help. So this year I installed a block heater and fast light pencil style glow plugs. Although it has not gotten cold enough to really try them out. I live in Minnesota by the way. Second, on the freeway 70-75mph that engine is screaming. it will do it just fine but fuel economy goes down.

So here is my question. I have the chance to buy a 1982 300d turbo diesel. I have read these are geared much better for the freeway. That will do me no good if it will not start in very cold weather. 10-15 below zero at times. I see people on youtube showing them starting their diesel Mercedes cars in cold weather but with as bad as mine did last year I just cant hardly believe it. If I have good glow plugs will this car start. I can use a block heater at home but I have no where to plug in at work. Please help I may buy this 300d tomorrow.

I think it would be the same way as the 240D when it comes to starting. The plus is that it is better on the highway when it comes to gearing.

Whether or not you should get it is up to you. I would do it just for the gearing alone.

240D is what 60HP?
The 300td is 112 HP. I bet you notice the difference.
Than I believe the glow plugs and injectors are the same technology, so not likely any improvement on cold start.
Block heater usually do the trick, although living in CA I tried to use it only once in my life on W124, that had the heater factory installed.
Once you start the engine in the morning, reheating it afternoon at work is not that critical.
Than not knowing the budget it is hard to advice anything.
Would you have about 8 grands you can look for 98-99 turbo diesel in W210. Not only way advance body, but the 174 ponies will give you nice kick in the back after much easier start.
My diesel fires up on the first turn even at the slight freezing we have here occasionally or after whole day sitting at ski resort below 20F.

I found that regular driving at 75 mph beat the crap out of my 1975 240D. I later learned that they were rated at about 83 mph, new out of the box. With twice the hp, the 300D would seem to be a better bet for that kind of use.
