Fit for Work

Hi Guys,
I am considering buying my first Mercedes Benz. I need a real workhorse of a car so am looking at the idea of investing in a pre-owned E series estate with CDI powerplant, say 4 or 5 years old. Obviously I will only consider a FMBSH and all the usual stuff. I am hoping that Mercedes has actually delivered on their claims to be reintroducing the quality of engineering they used to be known for. My questions are:

Will a car like this be as good as MB cars used to be, before the MB engineering quality was reduced some years ago?

The only cars I see with rust problems seem to be elderly Mercedes Benz. Has this been addressed in modern MB cars?

Are there any known problems to look out for when buying an E series CDI built around 2004 or 2005?

Are all the CDI engines as reliable and desireable as each other? Obviously I know the power and fuel economy figures as published for the new engines but not for the previous versions.

When did the latest series of CDI engine get launched?

Are the earlier powerplants to be avoided or preferred or is there little difference between them?

Thanks for any and all insights. I tend to keep my cars for many years so like to get it right.

As far as I know, the quality of the E class has gotten a lot better over the years. Also, the CDI is one of the most reliable Merc engines so you should be food.

Well, the car would not be an investment. A tool, perhaps. Going beyond would be stretching the issue.

You have great odds with the MB 2005-, principally diesel, if you like them and have no problem finding low-sulfur, good quality fuel. Upkeep it and you will have a long lived loyal companion that will take you everywhere you wish to go.

The CPO cars from MB dealers, with factory extended warranty (worth purchasing if you depend from dealer's attention) is the way to go. However, maintenance service will have you cursing at the cost if you have to have it done at the dealer to maintain the warranty.

Best of luck in your choice. JV
