E320 cdi '05 50k miles needs a glow plug!

My '05 E320 cdi needs a glow plug (maybe #6 or #4) - with only 50k miles on the clock I'm suprised that it crapped out so quickly. On my (pos) 97 suburban I get about 80 - 100k on glow plugs (I live in Georgia, it's not like they are used like they would be in Alaska!).

Here are my questions:
1. Does anyone have any experience with cdi's of this era? Is there anything else I should be concerned with?
2. I expect the OEM replacements are Bosch plugs. Are they the best ones to use?

You should proceed with extreme caution, as the cylinder head is aluminum and it's not unheard of to have problems getting blow plugs (or injectors) out without problems and possible thread stripping.

It's sheer tomfoolery to not have access to official WIS procedures before starting this job. Get these either by owning the service DVD or by subscribing at http://www.startekinfo.com

Even then, your best bet is to have the service performed by a Mercedes dealer. Any independent mechanic considered should have Mercedes training and an on-site subscription to WIS.

Ahh, yes. I should have added that I am using an independant MB shop that has access to WIS and receives MB sponsored training on a regular basis. I'm confident with their competence. I'm a bit uncomfortable with their quick desire to simply use the OEM glow plug; and am suprised with how quickly the glow plug went bad.

I don't think you will find too big parts selection on pretty rare engine in US.
Glow plugs don't wear out, but they fail occasionally. Some run a million miles, while other burn at 50k...
Having 2 failing at the same time might be abnormal. I would double check the diagnosis.
