young kid, old car. (two problems with car)

Hey, im brian.
im 19 and i just purchased a 1985 300D turbo. It's the 4 speed automatic. And i must say, for $500 it's a pretty solid car, although i have two rather big fixes ahead it's better than any other car you can get around here for five hundred bucks. It's been partially restored by my old carpentry teacher, who bought it after it sat for several years. since then he's done some minor work on the engine, and now that runs like a top. the problem is getting that power to the wheels.

I'll start with the most serious problem on the car right now is the transmission. For some reason the car doesn't like to shift from second into third. on flat roads sometimes it will shift alright, but most of the time the engine will over rev, and i need to back off on the accelerator for a moment to get it to upshift and then continue. i can still drive it around, but it does require attention. would there be any fairly easy fix for this or would it require serious transmission work?

The second problem is the rear suspension is dead. go over a small bump and the back end keeps bouncing. i believe this would mean i need new struts. i was wondering if that is going to be a pain to do. i would imagine swapping them out with another set wouldn't be too hard, but to be honest i have no experience working with suspension, although i do understand how they work.

any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks!
