280GE G-WAGEN More power 20" wheels 35" tires

Hi. I have a few MBs and my latest acquisition is a 1985 280GE with M110 engine that by today's standards is anemic and underpowered. As a first step I changed the air filter to K&N. Has anyone tried any means of increasing HP? How about changing the engine to MB V8 or MB V12? Or Chevy 350? I have the original 15 in wheels with 31 in BFGtires. I recently changed them to 18's x8 with 275/65s GY but still wasn't good looking, so I just purchased 20's x 9.5 and plan to install 33's or 35's x 12.5 new Nitto Trail Grapplers.
Has anyone tried these? I would like to hear previous experiences. What do I need to change or watch out for? My bodyman can cut off metal under the chassis, but I have no idea how the gear ratios will work.
