Inherited a very nice 90 MB 300E but what a nightmare its turned out to be. The car drives great for the first 10 or 20 miles, then the transmission drops down to 3rd and then 2nd and refuses to upshift, have to drive in 2nd, about 40mph at 4000 rpm, take all back roads, I've changed two fuel pumps, fuel filter, regulator, all the parts under the car that make up "fuel pumps. I'm changing the Idel Air Control Valve and the Fuel Regulator tomorrow, while I disconnect the battery to reset the computer. The car has about 217,000 miles on it and when it runs, it runs great. From reading the forum for two nights in a row, it seems there is an internal computer that forces the trans into 2nd and keeps it from upshifting when it senses something going wrong with the engine. Sounds like a sneaky way to force you into a dealership for "mystery" repairs and half the time they don't know what's wrong either! My first experience with a Mercedes and its a total nightmare.
And if you read the forum long enough you would definitely not buy a MB. Worst of all, any part you need is usually 200-300 dollars! Lastly, I spent two days putting a new radio, cd player in the car. Talk about nightmare wiring. The wiring for the radio makes no sense at all. Finally after getting the radio in, rewiring the rear speakers, (used existing wires for the front ones) my antenna doesn't work and the dash lights are all dimed into nonexistence. (Could not find the wires for the antenna or dash lights) Another slick way to force you into a dealership. What happened to Mercedes Benz?
