Just Bought '06 R350
Just bought my fifth Mercedes, a 2006 R350 with 49k miles, after a hiatus from MB since 1995. The engineering and quality issues were concerning for about 10 years, so I hope this 06 will have limited issues.
Others owned in past include:
1974 280C (with the horrible dual overhead cam engine) (gave to son)
1982 240 gasser, 2.4L 4 cyl (poor fuel economy for a 4 cyl)
1991 190 4 cyl. (gave to niece)
I always loved the ride and drive of my MB's. I 'came across' the R-class, drove it, and it was great! My old MB ride and drive were evident in the test drive. No other car could run down the side roads as fast as the R350.
Now that I have about 1,500 miles on this vehicle, observations are that it is very quiet, esp. in the MB way, controls are excellent, engine has the very smooth at high rpm, sewing machine sound, and the ride is firm but not rough, and it handles well, but very controlled. It has the MB lovely tendency to be desirable to drive fast on the freeway...just goes and goes faster, without effort.
Fuel economy has been 23-23.5 on freeway, at 70-75, and 23-25-25.5 on side roads at 60 or so. Side roads lower figure is for hill country, higher for level.
My wife is tiny, but could always find good seating in our MB's and this is true for this vehicle.
Good interior volume and great seating, including the third row. Even my 92YOA father who likes soft seating did not complain...he liked it.
Why did I buy? Because my excellent running Buick Roadmaster wagon with 160k miles was more than 11 years old and GM was no longer carrying parts; its an "out of policy" car. I loved the wagon and it ran very well, but lack of parts became an issue; GM has given up on me. I was a Buick fan- big, fast, durable, good fuel economy, but no more.
On the other hand, I could always get parts and service no matter what the age and miles of my MB's. I plan for this to possibly be my last vehicle of its type, since I will always be able to keep it on the road in good shape. When my other Buick is sold (Park Avenue has 213k miles and running excellent), I will pick up an MB SL.
I am pleased to be numbered among the MB owners again!
