OK, I'll agree that you are responsible for the car during the time your lease is running. But the question remaining is what is "excessive wear based on the standards of normal use"? Obviously, the dealer accepting the return will determine that but probably uses a checklist from MB telling them exactly what to look for and what to charge you for it.
If it makes you feel more comfortable, by all means, try and fix the imperfections but you'd better do a very good job. I'll bet that it will cost the dealer more to fix a botched touch-up job than it would to have a professional body shop fix it in the first place. Good Luck.
