R500 vs. R350

Hello -
My wife is finishing her residency and we are trading in our trusted Honda Element for something safer and with more room for two carseats and travel. I've fallen in love with the R series and have seen some posts on benzworld comparing the R350 to the R500. I have just a few questions I'm hoping someone can help with. At first I was just open to getting the R500. Is the 500 that much more powerful than the 350? I've only driven the 350 and coming from the Element obviously the V6 was much more powerful.

But...if the 500 offered that much more power and torque...permagrin would follow. I do live in the mountains and whitewater kayak and will be taking this vehicle on several twisty "roads less traveled" by in search of rain swollen creeks in the hills.

Has the 500 been more reliable than the 350?

And last...when asking about some of the used R series models are there any questions or features to look for?

Thanks a ton. We're looking in the mid $20's for this first Mercedes and I'm really excited about the safety, style, features, and power I've been longing for. I just want to get the most reliable performance for our purchase. Any advice on the two models or the R series in general would be appreciated. Cheers...

Welcome to the forum. The R500 is not that much more powerful then the R350. The 500 is 302 HP and the 350 is 268 HP. From a reliability stand point, they are about the same.

The 500 is the M113, first seen in 1987. It has 16 sparkplugs.

The 350 is the M272, first seen in 2006. It has 6 sparkplugs.

I think a better gauge of perceivable power between the two engines is the torque and the torque curve rather than raw HP. I don't have it in a postable format but those should be easy to find.

You can do much, much better for $20 grand. Mercedes has only sold a hand full of these ugly mini-van Chrysler Alabama built big door rolling disasters this year, and is currently considering cutting the thing from the line-up for good reason. There are much, much better choices within the segment from other manufacturers or even Mercedes.
